Moving and relocation loans: bridging the most expensive month of the year

A move stacks a deposit, first month's rent, movers, utility hookups and often a week or two of paying for two homes into about thirty days. A small, short personal loan can bridge that month at a fraction of what a card balance costs, if you borrow only for the gap and pay it off fast.

For a renter paying $1,800 a month who hires local movers, the first-month cash need is routinely $6,000–$8,000: $3,600–$5,400 at lease signing plus $1,500 for movers plus deposits and overlap. That is the number to plan against, not the movers' quote.

Why moves get financed even by people with savings

The costs are front-loaded and partly refundable. Your old security deposit comes back 14–30 days after you leave (state law sets the deadline), a relocation reimbursement arrives after the first payroll, and the furniture can wait, but the lease signing and the movers will not. A moving loan is therefore usually a bridge: money needed for one to three months until the refundable and reimbursable pieces arrive, after which it should be repaid immediately. That is why term matters more here than for almost any other borrowing purpose: a $4,000 loan is nearly free if repaid in three months and expensive if it drifts to three years.

Rule of thumb: if most of the money comes back within 90 days (deposit refund, employer reimbursement, signing bonus), a 0% purchase card or a credit-union loan you prepay is the right tool. If you are truly short and will need a year or more, a fixed-term personal loan at 2 years or less is.

Ways to pay for a move, compared

Employer relocation package or signing bonus

Cost $0 (taxable income)

Lump sums of $2,000–$10,000 are common for professional hires; full-service moves for senior roles. Negotiable even when not offered, and a signing bonus timed to the move does the same job.

Fits: any job-related move. Ask before you accept the offer.

Personal loan, short term

APR ≈ 10% – 14% good credit · 12 – 36 months

$1,000 minimum at Upgrade, Upstart and Happen Bank; $2,000–$2,500 at Discover, Best Egg and Avant; credit unions from $500. Funds in a day or two, fixed payment, no prepayment penalty, so you can clear it when the old deposit comes back.

Fits: a gap of $2,000+ you will carry more than three months.

0% intro purchase card

Promo 0% for 12 – 21 mo

Movers, truck rentals, furniture and utility deposits can go on a card; most landlords cannot take one for rent without a 2%–3% fee. Free if cleared inside the promotion.

Fits: the movers' bill and setup costs for borrowers with good credit.

Credit-union loan or PAL

APR ≤ 18% · PAL ≤ 28%, up to $2,000

Small amounts, lenient underwriting, fast. The cheapest route for fair credit and for amounts under the online lenders' minimums.

Fits: gaps under $2,000 or scores under 640.

Deposit alternatives

Fee $10 – $40 / mo or 15% – 20% one-time, non-refundable

Many large landlords accept a surety bond or monthly fee in place of a cash deposit. Removes the biggest lump but costs more than a loan if you stay several years; you remain liable for damage.

Fits: short leases where preserving cash matters most.

Regular card balance, BNPL stacks, payday loans

APR 22% – 391%

A $4,000 move carried on a card at 22.36% paying $200 a month takes 26 months and costs about $1,050 in interest. Payday loans cost more than that in two months. Multiple BNPL plans for furniture are how the move follows you for a year.

Fits: nothing you cannot repay at the next statement.

A $4,000 gap, three ways

Renter moving across town for a new job: $3,600 due at signing, $1,500 of movers, $600 of deposits and setup; $1,700 in savings; $4,000 short. Good credit; October 2026 rates; our amortization math.

Personal loan · 14% · 24 mo, prepaid at month 3≈ $135 interestOld deposit ($1,800) and first paycheck clear most of it early; no prepayment penalty
Personal loan · 14% · 24 mo, full term$192 / mo$609 total interest · the cost of letting a bridge loan run its course
Credit card · 22.36% · $200 / mo26 months≈ $1,052 interest · plus most landlords add a 2%–3% card fee on rent

The loan is cheap when it behaves like a bridge and merely acceptable when it does not. The deciding habit is applying the refunded deposit to the loan the day it arrives.

Six ways to shrink the number before you borrow

  • Negotiate the lease startA start date one or two weeks later than your old lease ends eliminates overlap rent, often the single largest avoidable cost.
  • Ask about deposit alternatives and move-in specialsHalf-off first month and reduced deposits are common in soft rental markets and in winter.
  • Get three binding mover quotes, mid-week, mid-monthWeekend and end-of-month moves cost 20%–30% more. Verify interstate movers at the FMCSA's mover search (USDOT number) to avoid hostage-load scams.
  • Hybrid the movePack yourself, hire labor-only movers for the heavy items, or use a portable container for long distance; each cuts the bill by a third or more.
  • Claim your old deposit in writingSend a forwarding address and a request on move-out day; most states require return within 14–30 days and penalize landlords who miss it.
  • Defer furnitureEverything except a bed can wait a paycheck or two. Furniture financing is where small moving budgets become large ones.

Moving loan questions

What is a moving loan?

A small unsecured personal loan, typically $1,000–$10,000 over one to three years, used to cover the lump of costs that arrive in the same month during a move: security deposit, first and last month's rent, movers or a truck, utility deposits and overlap rent. Lenders do not offer a special product; any personal loan can be used for relocation.

How much does it cost to move in 2026?

A local move with professional movers typically runs $500–$3,500 depending on home size, with most two- to three-bedroom homes around $1,250–$1,700. Long-distance moves run $1,500–$8,500 or more; a two- to three-bedroom home moved 500–1,000 miles typically costs $3,000–$5,300, and cross-country averages near $4,600. Fuel surcharges rose sharply in mid-2026. Add deposits and overlap housing, which often exceed the movers' bill.

Can I get a loan to cover a security deposit?

Yes; a security deposit is an ordinary use of a personal loan. Before borrowing, ask the landlord about deposit alternatives: many large landlords now accept a small monthly fee or a surety bond instead of a cash deposit (read the terms; the fee is not refundable), and some states cap deposits at one month's rent. Also claim your previous deposit promptly; most states require its return within 14–30 days.

Are moving expenses tax-deductible?

For most people, no. The federal moving-expense deduction was suspended in 2018 and the suspension was made permanent in 2025; it remains available only to active-duty military moving under orders. A handful of states still allow a state-level deduction. Employer reimbursements for moving are taxable income for civilian employees.

Should I ask my employer for a relocation package?

Always, if the move is for a job. Packages range from a flat lump sum of $2,000–$10,000 to full-service moves for senior hires, and many employers will negotiate even when none is offered. A signing bonus timed to the move can serve the same purpose. Note that the payment is taxable; ask whether it is grossed up.

What if my credit is not good enough for a personal loan?

For a move, the amounts are small enough that alternatives work: a credit-union loan or payday alternative loan (up to $2,000 at 28% or less), a secured loan against savings, a co-signed loan, or spreading costs with a deposit-alternative program and a rental truck instead of full-service movers. Avoid payday and title loans; a $1,000 payday loan rolled over for two months costs more than the entire interest on a $4,000 personal loan.
